Biographical Sketch: Walter W. Moreland was a long-time member of the Dothan Rotary Club and its newsletter editor, ca. 1958-59, 1986-[99].
Moreland, born in Thomasville, GA, in 1919, returned to the Wiregrass after U.S. Army service in Egypt during World War 2 (clerk in Adjutant General's Office). He worked for the W. J. Powell Company (wholesale fruits and vegetables, est. 1931) of Thomasville, GA. He transferred to Dothan, AL, in [1954] to manage the Powell Company office there. In 1941, Moreland married Doris West. They had four children: Karen, Melanie, Leslie (Les), and Bret.
Moreland joined Rotary in October 1952 and became the Dothan Club president for 1956-57. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and served on multiple Rotary committees, foundations, and other bodies. In the Dothan community, Moreland served on many committees and governing boards for Covenant UMC Church, the Houston County Red Cross, Boys Club, Chamber of Commerce, and City of Dothan Personnel Board.
His son, Les Moreland, joined the Dothan Rotary Club at age 21 and in 1996 served
as president.

Scope / Content Note: Documents activities and membership of the Dothan, AL, Rotary Club and, to a much lesser extent, Rotary International. Contains Dothan Rotary newsletters, 1965-1999; Dothan Rotary Membership Directories, 1954-2001; VHS and audiocassettes of Dothan Rotary meetings; a few Rotary International publications; and Walter Moreland's papers including copies of Rotary talks he gave, correspondence about his editorship of the newsletter and information on the Southeast Alabama Rehabilitation Center.
Organization: Organized into five series:
- Series 1: Walter Moreland Papers, 1956-1992: Documents talks before various Rotary Clubs by Moreland and others, his correspondence, his report as Rotary President, 1957 and his involvement in various service projects.
- Series 2: Dothan Rotary Newsletters, 1965-1999: Weekly newsletter for the Dothan Rotary Club. The title changed from The Rotary Bulletin to Alter Ego in July 1986.
- Series 3: Dothan Rotary Membership Information Directories, 1954-55, 1989-90, 2000-01: Information on club members including a headshot of the member, birthday, spouse and children, contact information, church affiliation, education, hobbies, the date the member joined and who proposed their membership, and any credits and honors the member has received.
- Series 4: Audiovisual Materials, 1974-2001: Recorded speakers at Dothan Rotary Club meetings.
- Series 5: Rotary Publications, 1954-1998: Publication about what it means to be a Rotarian, detailing the history of the club and the various aspects of club service.
Provenance: Saved by Walter Moreland and inherited by Les Moreland after his father's death in 2005. Les Moreland arranged and packaged the material with the intent to give it to the Dothan Rotary Club. He discovered he had packed it away in his home, then gave it to the Wiregrass Archives in July 2015.
