Area V

Music / Education  

This major is available through the Troy Campus only.

AREA I-V Recommendations

AREA I:

A grade of "C" or higher is required in Composition I and II at ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ.  "D" grades will not transfer.

AREA II:

Choose at least 3sh in Literature from the approved list on the guide.

Students attending ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ are required to take a general studies course in World Music Cultures. There is no community college equivalent for this course.  Students attending a community college are strongly encouraged to take additional hours from Area V course options for this credit.

Students attending ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ are also required to complete Survey of Western Music History I and Music History II. Students attending a community college are strongly encouraged to take MUS 203/204 (Music History I/II) at the community college to meet this requirement.

When selecting courses from Areas II and IV, please note that at least one 6sh sequence in either Literature (Area II) or History (Area IV) must be completed.

AREA III:

A grade of "C" or higher is required in the Math course chosen.  "D" grades will not transfer.

AREA IV:

When selecting courses from Areas II and IV, please note that at least one 6sh sequence in either Literature (Area II) or History (Area IV) must be completed.

AREA V:

The remaining 22 SH in Area V can be obtained at the community college by taking 22 SH from the following:

• MUS 111 (Music Theory I)(3SH)
• MUS 112 (Music Theory II)(3SH)
• MUS 113 (Music Theory Lab I)(Aural Skills)(1SH)
• MUS 114 (Music Theory Lab II)(Aural Skills)(1SH)
• 5 SH – Individual performance instruction taken from MUP courses, which must include a complete sequence in a single area of instruction
• 4 SH – Music Ensemble instruction taken from MUL courses numbered 180 or above
• ORI 101 (Orientation to College)(1 SH)
• MUP 101 (Private Piano I)(1-2SH)
• MUP 102 (Private Piano II)(1-2SH)
• MUS 203 (Music History I)(3 SH) – if not completed in Area II
• MUS 204 (Music History II)(3 SH) – if not completed in Area II
• MUS 211 (Music Theory III)(1-3SH)
• MUS 212 (Music Theory IV)(1-3SH)

 

¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ Baccalaureate Degrees

The student seeking a baccalaureate degree must meet the following credit hour requirements:

1. A minimum of 120 SH
2. At least 50 percent of the degree program must be traditional academic credit.
3. No more than 25 percent of the degree program may be earned using portfolio based credit.
4. At least 25 percent of the degree program must be completed with ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ.
5. Twelve (12) semester hours of work in each major field must be completed in residence at ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ.
